WATER Reclamation
The key to sustainable water management.

Water is too precious to be used only once.
Water is becoming increasingly scarce every day. Drought periods, climate change, population growth, urbanization and industrialization or over-exploitation of this valuable, renewable resource are driving water scarcity to the forefront. Therefore, water recycling is becoming essential.
Intelligent reclamation systems can make a significant contribution to the increased water availability needed to meet potable, commercial, agricultural and industrial demands, and improve supply reliability. In addition, reclamation systems require less energy and are more cost-effective compared to alternatives like seawater desalination or long-distance transportation.
Recycle and Reuse of Municipal Wastewater
Through advanced treatment schemes, municipal wastewater can be efficiently reclaimed and reused, relieving pressure on freshwater sources, fostering water conservation and contributing to socio-economic development.
Today, the recycling of water using modern technologies is both viable and safe.
Our technologies fulfill all the requirements for recycled water. The main pollutants to be removed include Organic and inorganic contaminants, Turbidity, Toxic substances, Bacteria and viruses, Protozoa, Helminth eggs.
Utilizing our wide range of established and innovative technologies, WABAG can tailor individual solutions in the form of multi-barrier treatment systems that meet all relevant regulations. These systems combine appropriate technologies for various applications, including agricultural irrigation, urban reuse for irrigation or service water, industrial reuse, and even potable water production.
Typically for agricultural irrigation:
Tertiary sand or Dual media filtration & Disinfection using Cl2 or UV
Typically for urban reuse:
Tertiary sand filtration & Disinfection,
Biofiltration/Ultrafiltration/Dual Media Filter & Disinfection
For Industrial water recycling & reuse:
Depending on the application, we employ main technologies such as: Coagulation/Flocculation, Clarification, Filtration, Oxidation, Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis, Ion Exchange.
WABAG is an expert in the field of water recycling and reuse and in some areas represents a pioneer. We were one of the first companies to develop modern water reclamation concepts and during the past two decades have implemented 70 schemes involving a wide range of applications.

The Madinat Salman Water Reclamation Plant helps to close the water cycle in Bahrain.

BAHRAIN: Madinat Salman WWTP & Water Reclamation Plant
A new city, Madinat Salman, developed on reclaimed land in Bahrain, hosts around 100,000 residents. For the treatment of municipal wastewater and subsequent water reuse, WABAG built the new sewage treatment plant, designed to handle 40,000 m3/d with the potential for an additional 20,000 m3/d, along with a 21 m deep terminal lift pumping station.
The plant aligns with Bahrain’s vision for the reuse of treated sewage effluent. Environmental sensitivity was prioritized during construction by protecting freshwater aquifers. Effluent is treated to high standards, enabling reuse in community green spaces through a self-contained irrigation system. Furthermore, an advanced sludge management system enables the recycling of dewatered sludge into fertilizer pellets, which are packaged on site and ready to be used by farmers.
Technology: Mechanical/biological treatment: Screening, grit removal, aeration tanks, physical-chemical treatment of phosphorus, secondary settling, tertiary treatment: sand filtration + UV disinfection. Sludge thickening, aerobic stabilization and dewatering, final sludge drying & bagging plant.
Capacity: 40,000 m3/d , Lift PS: 85,000 m3/d

SIDI BOU ALI, EL JEM, and QUERDANIN WWTPs in Tunisia
Actively support agriculture while simultaneously protecting the environment and climate.
TUNISIA: 3 STEPS PROJECT:
Tunisia faces severe water scarcity, exacerbated by urban growth, increased demand, and the need to support rural areas with irrigation. To address this challenge, Tunisia has constructed wastewater treatment plants, allowing for water reuse in agriculture. This initiative addresses water scarcity and helps Tunisia adapt to climate change.
WABAG has contributed to this effort by building three small-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants – Project “3 Steps” – for the national ONAS. These plants feature three-stage treatment processes, ensuring the safe reuse of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation. This investment in environmentally sustainable wastewater disposal preserves the environment, benefits communities and supports socio-economic development.
Technology: Mechanical/biological treatment: Screening, grit removal, aeration tanks, physico-chemical treatment of phosphorus, secondary settling, tertiary treatment: sand filtration + UV disinfection. Sludge thickening and dewatering.
Capacities: 1,595 m3/d / 3,300 m3/d / 2,900 m3/d
Start-up: 2022 – 2023
